Facebook buys Instagram for $1 Billion

Posted by ~ Erch ~ on Monday, April 9, 2012 | 10:57

Everyone’s favorite social photo sharing network, Instagram, has just been purchased by Facebook for a reported $1 billion. Instagram has put out the following statement, Facebook  announced this morning in a blog post.
Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook, posted about the transaction on his Timeline:
I'm excited to share the news that we've agreed to acquire Instagram and that their talented team will be joining Facebook.

For years, we've focused on building the best experience for sharing photos with your friends and family. Now, we'll be able to work even more closely with the Instagram team to also offer the best experiences for sharing beautiful mobile photos with people based on your interests.

We believe these are different experiences that complement each other. But in order to do this well, we need to be mindful about keeping and building on Instagram's strengths and features rather than just trying to integrate everything into Facebook.

That's why we're committed to building and growing Instagram independently. Millions of people around the world love the Instagram app and the brand associated with it, and our goal is to help spread this app and brand to even more people.

We think the fact that Instagram is connected to other services beyond Facebook is an important part of the experience. We plan on keeping features like the ability to post to other social networks, the ability to not share your Instagrams on Facebook if you want, and the ability to have followers and follow people separately from your friends on Facebook.

These and many other features are important parts of the Instagram experience and we understand that. We will try to learn from Instagram's experience to build similar features into our other products. At the same time, we will try to help Instagram continue to grow by using Facebook's strong engineering team and infrastructure.

This is an important milestone for Facebook because it's the first time we've ever acquired a product and company with so many users. We don't plan on doing many more of these, if any at all. But providing the best photo sharing experience is one reason why so many people love Facebook and we knew it would be worth bringing these two companies together.

We're looking forward to working with the Instagram team and to all of the great new experiences we're going to be able to build together.

Instagram finally arrived on Windows Phone as Metrogram

Posted by ~ Erch ~ on Sunday, January 22, 2012 | 00:39

Instagram, one of the most popular applications for the iPhone, can not seem to find their way to other mobile platforms. On Apple devices this photo application that allows users to capture, edit, filter and publish photos, has about 15 million users and it is certain to find that success on other platforms.
.
We got tip from the creator of this application Nazer Aminou that from last week he was working on Instragram client for Windows Phone.

Here are Nazer words regarding Metrogram.
The app allow login, search, browse popular pictures, live tiles, location, browse user profile and photo but not posting pictures. It’s just a viewer. But since the app is a little buggy I’ve decided to upload a light version off the app.

Currently the light version (the one on the marketplace) just allow to browse popular pictures, see comments and likes and share the picture on social network. The next update will bring (login, browse profiles, search, more themes, live tiles, screenshots, and requests from users).

If the app has some success, I will request permission for uploading pictures
Metrogram is available for download in Windows Phone Marketplace.

Thanks Nazer for the tip.

Windows Phone 7 may get Instagram before Android

Posted by ~ Erch ~ on Thursday, January 19, 2012 | 14:18

Rumor has it that the hit app will be making its way to Windows Phones before it debuts on Android.

Instagram has catapulted to major success, winning iPhone’s app of the year and spawning an entire ecosystem of smartphone photo products. Despite its enormous popularity, the app has remained rather simple, with only one major upgrade being issued and the team staying relatively small.

Now, it appears that Windows Phone 7 users will get their hands on the much-anticipated app first. Insiders tell FastCompany that just may be the case. “A source recently left the impression that the Windows Phone team has possibly been working with the folks from Instagram,” says the site. Systrom would not confirm or deny the rumor. “Other than having pre-announced Android, we don’t comment on roadmap stuff.”
