Samsung Prepping Two Smartphones Running Android 2.0

Android 1.5 is still a few days away from being widely distributed but talk of the next major version has already started. According to an unconfirmed report, two smartphones scheduled for release this fall will run Android 2.0.

Samsung is rumored to be prepping two models running the next version of Google's operating system. The Spica will allegedly be similar to the already announced Samsung I7500 but scaled back a bit, while the device code-named Bigfoot will add a sliding keyboard.

These two models will reportedly have a great deal in common, including their 3-inch QVGA touchscreens, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G, 3 MPx cameras, and microSD card slots. The Bigfoot will be a bit thicker, as its keyboard will take up some room.

They are expected to be released by T-Mobile this fall, and almost certainly other carriers as well.

What's New in Android 2.0?
The release of the next version of Google's OS isn't going to happen for about 6 months, so few details are available.

About the only new feature it will definitely have, according to the official roadmap of Android development, is support for additional screen resolutions: WVGA and QVGA. Only HVGA displays are supported by Android 1.5, while both of Samsung's upcoming models will reportedly have QVGA ones.

The code-name for this new version is also known: donut. A theme is emerging, as the code-name for the open-source project that eventually became Android 1.5 is cupcake.

In fact, handheld devices are gearing towards specialized functions as opposed to the "jack-of-all-trades" type. Some models are designed to be wholly dedicated to office and business functions, while others focus on connectivity or on media. This is good news for all of us, regardless of our needs and preferences, because this means that there's a model for everyone's varying needs.

Overall, the future for PDAs looks bright and it does not seem as if they will soon be replaced in our lives. The LG KS360 Review

The LG KS360 is a funky looking mobile phone from LG, with a full QWERTY keyboard. It is a phone made for the masses who like to text in large volumes. It is quite a large phone, measuring 101.5 x 51 x 16.8 mm and weighs a fairly heavy 108 grams. The front of the phone is dominated by the large 2.4 inch screen, and there are a few call related keys beneath it, as well as a rather unique looking NavPad. There is also a very clever little button (that looks a little like a calculator) that controls whether you turn on or off the touch screen. To type sms’s and emails in mass, you can then slide out the full QWERTY keyboard, which looks equally as cool and funky looking.

The music player will support all popular formats, and has 15 mega bytes of internal memory. However this can be increased by using a MicroSD card, and there is of course an FM Radio.
The camera is pretty simple but will take reasonable pictures. There are 2 mega pixels, with fixed focus, and almost no advanced features. Application-wise there are not any smartphone features. There is no GPS, no 3G and no Wifi. There are of course the basics such as calendar, alarm, personal organiser etc. The coolest feature is being able to switch on and off the touch screen, which allows you to use that really clever full qwerty keyboard. Internet connection is pretty good using EDGE, bluetooth and a USB jack.

Overall, the LG KS360 is a modern looking, full qwerty phone that is made for the texter. This really is a great phone to get if you want to stand out from the crowd.

The LG Viewty is by far packed full of great features, and with its slick look you are sure to want to get one yourself. In fact the camera also has a strobe flash, and a focus assist beam to get those pictures looking great. In fact the LG Viewty also offers a secondary video camera that you can use for video calls. The Viewty also offers TV out support, there is also an original stylus dongle. Also available on the LG Viewty is the ability to play DivX video playback.

You always have disadvantages with any new product that hits the market, and unfortunately the LG Viewty is no exception to that rule. The LG Viewty has no hot swap memory card capability; with the stylus it's more inconvenient than it is a plus. With the use of file management the system slows when the memory card is beginning to fill up. This is the same with anything that gets close to having the memory full. If you operate the zooming jog wheel it will get in the way of the lens.

The LG Viewty comes in other colors too, check out the fancy looking red one. The LG Viewty has been compared to other newer phones out is seems to be as impressive and as highly sophisticated as others that are on the market.

When looking at the front panel of the LG Viewty you will see that there are only three hardware keys. The green and red send and end keys and the cancel C key. The battery is outstanding in the LG Viewty and it can last a full two to two and half days. This is an amazing amount of time.

The LG Viewty is an excellent phone; it makes the choice of what phone to get out of all the new ones a bit more difficult. With so many choices that offer so many features, you really have to go more on what you feel looks best to you. But you should easily put the LG Viewty up in the top five if not higher when trying to decide.

The phone again is very stylish looking and if you get another color like red for your LG Viewty it could make a nice change to whatever phone you might be carrying around right now. So go to the store and check out the LG Viewty!

Research in Motion (RIMM) is stepping up in order to expand their market share while competing with their rival, iPhone from Apple, to maintain its preference among high-end users.

The makers of BlackBerry are expanding their market from high-end business users to consumers. BlackBerry has always been very strong in the commercial market, mainly because of its ability to help people access their e-mail, contacts, and calendars. After Apple’s iPhone Division introduced a handset version design to appeal to the business users, Research in Motion is responding to this by announcing new features to appeal to a broader group of consumers.

This new rivalry could be seen as destructive for both companies, but it is rather beneficial. Since both companies are getting into each other markets’ niche, this will benefit consumers. Both companies are investing more money to develop new features and may even lower prices to increase their sales. This may expand the already growing market for smart phones and with more sales the wealth of the firms will increase and consequently they will continue investing; a virtuous cycle of sorts. This is a win/win situation for the both the firms and consumers. For example, RIMM plans to announce new features for their new cell phone that allows clients to control their TiVo and have access to their MySpace network. So, do not be surprised if one of these days you can watch your favorite TV program, be in contact with your friend via e-mail and manage your business all at once with your smart phone.

I have worked with both the Blackberry and the IPhone, due to its advantages for me, I prefer the IPhone. However, the Blackberry is coming out with much improved designs and uses for their phones making them a much tougher competitor vs. IPhone. I never had thought about the price. Yet if the blackberry lowers their prices, they are going to have a much wider range of customers than IPhone. Even though IPhone has lowered prices, it’s still more expensive than Blackberry. I think that even within the same segment, they have different subgroups who buy their products. The blackberry is much more of a business phone and appeals to many people in high-end business, while IPhone appeals more to the entertainment side of costumers. It is a close call for both companies, yet I do believe that their rivalry can be of good to them both with different target groups and different market strategies. Maybe one day they could join their innovations and make a phone that would wow the imagination.

One could also argue the fact that when it comes to iPhone vs. Blackberry the question is not which one appeals to business and which one appeals to regular consumers, but its marketing. Both products have almost the same features like email, speed and ergonomic looks. While Blackberry has always focused on a business type consumer, Apple found a way to appeal to both business and regular consumers. iPhone is a better marketed product. The iPhone can most definitely be used for business purposes As a matter of fact, that’s the first reason it came out. Now with the new features like the application store, it can be used as more of an everyday phone. Granted, Blackberry isn’t too far off the competition, now with their soon to be launched “Blackberry Storm” they will be appealing to regular consumers. Blackberry is getting better at marketing to a bigger audience but iPhone is still way ahead from purely a marketing and general population appeal point of view.

The Nokia N96 16gb Review

Today I finally got a chance to review the Nokia’s Flagship Phone – The Nokia N96 16GB.

The first thing that I noticed with this phone is the smoothness of its front surface. The buttons are embedded giving it a clean and glossy look. Even the video conference camera is hardly noticeable at first glance.

It is noticeably taller and wider than its successful predecessor, the N95. But the thickness and weight has been significantly reduced making it convenient to carry around and place inside your front pocket.

The 2.8” QVGA with 16 million colors is one of the best cell phone screens I have ever seen in the Nokia N-series line. The colors and images are very vivid and the picture quality makes the user interface comes to life. This phone is definitely designed for rich multi-media viewing pleasures.

Watching movies on a mobile phone has never been this good. As soon as I slide the D-pad up, the screen rotated to a landscape mode giving me a full-widescreen display. The dedicated media buttons are conveniently placed on the left side of the D-Pad and illuminate with a white glow as you touch it. The small flip-stand situated the camera lens is well located and perfectly angled when placing the phone on top of my desk while watching broadcast TV or listening to internet radio.

The 5 Megapixel Carl Zeiss optic camera with dual flash LED makes a direct statement that the N-series still holds its ground when it comes to digital photography. The N96 is obviously one of the best camera phones in the industry.

The enormous16GB storage capacity guarantees that it can easily accommodate huge collections of pictures, music albums, movies, television shows, N-Gage games, and hundreds of applications. And if it is still not enough, you can still upgrade up to 24GB!

Being a Quad-Band phone with 3G, EGPRS, EDGE, and WiFi support, voice and data communication will never be a problem anywhere you go. The built-in GPS navigation with turn-by-turn directional system makes it a perfect companion for travelers and drivers. The Sony Ericsson C901, also known as the Filippa is a new Cyber-Shot cell phone that Sony plans to release this year. The cell phone features a 5 mega pixel camera and joins the ranks of other Sony Cyber-Shot cell phones. Many are considering this cell phone a less intricate version of the Sony Ericsson C902, which is well-liked but somewhat expensive.

The camera that comes onboard the Sony Ericsson C901 has many features and is considered to be on the higher end in the cell phone world. It has Xenon flash functionality for getting rid of dark backgrounds, and also comes equipped with auto focus to help atomically focus for those hard to take shots. The 3.2 megapixel camera lens isn't hidden away under the slider, so you can take pictures holding the phone like you would a camera. It's a shame its fixed focus, but the dual LED flash helps indoor shots and ultimately, you are not buying a Walkman phone for its picture taking ability really. Cell-based geo-tagging and picture blogging are also available and rounding out the media entertainment features are an FM RDS radio and a video player on the Sony Ericsson W705.
