New software update 8779 in Navifirm available for Nokia Lumia 710 and Lumia 800

Posted by ~ Erch ~ on Friday, July 6, 2012 | 01:24

The deployment of MCR3 (Consumer Mango Refresh 3) or Windows Phone Tango is already on a roll for  several days now and allowed many owners of Nokia Lumia 710 and 800 to complete the update. The software platform of the two smartphones Lumia seems to be intended to receive a new update. The information is obtainable from Navifirm , the server that contains all the new firmware and software updates for the Nokia. In Navifirm has just published the new 8779 software release , which should refer to an update post-Tango (8773).
More specifically, the two new builds would be the 1750.805.8779.12221 for Lumia 800 and the 1600.3031.8779.12810 for Lumia 710 . We are still not entirely clear what changes will be introduced with this release, but we note that the new build has already been used by the community of independent developers to create new versions of custom ROM. As an example  the ROM Lumiatrix ^ 7 for the Lumia 710 , based precisely on the new build 8779.12180.

At the time the new builds are only available for versions of the Lumia 710 and 800 sold in some Asian markets.

According to IDC Nokia has Shipped 2.2 Million Lumia Phones Last Quarter

Posted by ~ Erch ~ on Friday, June 8, 2012 | 08:09

IDC, the well-known company that conducts market research, has recently reported estimates of smartphones Lumia delivered in the period between January and March. These assessments, are coming from an authoritative source may submit to the inevitable margins of error, but are equally interesting, given that the Finnish manufacturer, when reporting the financial results for the first quarter of 2012 , had not specified the exact number of  sold Lumia devices.
According to IDC estimates, Nokia in the last quarter has delivered 2.2 million Lumia smartphones. We clarify that the estimates refer to the points "handed", in other words devices that reach store shelves, but that does not necessarily translate into actual copies sold to the end user.

Relating the alleged 2.2 million smartphones Lumia total number of smartphones sold in the first three months of the year (11.9 million units), you can see that the deliveries of the device Lumia are still marginal compared to the total number of Nokia smartphones, evidently still formed largely by terminals Symbian and Meego.
It must in any case make observations to utleriori. In the first three months of the marketing procedure of Lumia device was still in full swing and devices like the 610 had not yet disponbili Lumia. Secondly, the feedback of IDC leads to the conclusion not yet indicative of the results of first quarter sales. The company locates in the summer months and in general over the next two quarters is a favorable time to expand the installed base, is to begin to draw up budgets even more reliable.
The road of smartphones Lumia to establish itself in the smartphone market is still long and probably, as anticipated on several occasions by the former president of the company before year-end you can not get a clear picture of the results of the alliance between Nokia and Microsoft.

Nokia Lumia 900 launch pushed Windows Phone users to 13 million

Posted by ~ Erch ~ on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 | 06:37

As you can see from the chart above, the number of users who use Windows Phone Facebook is growing. The data comes directly from a research done by Microsoft and has been established that there are approximately 2 million monthly active users.
The data obtained are also due to strong sales of Nokia's Lumia Lumia 610 and 900, besides the fact that to sell well in Finland, are proving very popular elsewhere.
This could not only raise the number of Facebook users, but also improve the market share of Nokia. Are there in fact 4.2 million in sales for Q2 of 2012, slightly up from 3 million in sales in Q1.
Obviously in these results are not considered Windows Phone sold in China, because they do not have the full Facebook integration.

More positive Windows Phone sales news,Windows Phone market share started to go upwards

Posted by ~ Erch ~ on Thursday, May 10, 2012 | 05:21

Although the Windows Phone OS still holds rates of diffusion rather low in recent months, the market share of Windows Phone has experiencing a significant growth in some markets . These results have certainly been achieved thanks to the massive advertising campaign carried out by Nokia to promote their Lumia organized with the initiative from Microsoft called "Smoked by Windows Phone" which as we have seen , has proved successful.

Through WordPanel Kantar , we learn that even Windows Phone has reached the quota of ' 6% share in Germany , marking an increase of 3% only in recent weeks. Another very positive news coming from Russia and in particular the operator MTS announced that the sales figures in Q1 of this year alone. According to the Russian company, sales of Windows Phone devices have outsold the iPhone, with a percentage of ' 8.2% of total sales , with three terminals in the top five best sellers, including the Nokia 800 Lumia, Lumia Nokia 710 and HTC Mozart.
Also yesterday, we have noted how Chris Weber, head of Nokia USA, is happy about the sales of Lumia 900 in the U.S.A. According to analysts at Canaccord Genuity, the new Windows Phone from Nokia is the second best selling smartphone through AT & T (preceded only by the iPhone, which still owns 70% of sales in America) the results are far greater than the HTC X-One, to hours, is considered the best Android device on the market.
We hope, therefore, that the spread and growth of Microsoft's operating system is stable, especially with the arrival of the Nokia Lumia 610 which should give an extra boost to the OS in emerging markets and considering also that the manufacturers do not should no longer submit new terminal until the arrival of Windows Phone 8.

CTIA 2012 - Nokia Announces Upcoming Exclusive Apps For Lumia Windows Phone Devices

Posted by ~ Erch ~ on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 | 10:13

One of the key elements to differentiate the offering of Windows Phone from Nokia goes from that of competing producers to create unique applications dedicated to the owners of the Lumia smartphones.Since the inception of the smartphone market with Nokia operating system of Redmond, Drive applications such as Nokia, Nokia Maps and Nokia Music have indeed characterized the supplied Lumia software.
The Finnish manufacturer seems to want to grow the quantity of unique applications for its smartphones, that is why Nokia signed partnerships with major software companies to provide exclusive app.During CTIA 2012, which opened today in New Orleans, Nokia has announced several alliances with software companies like EA and Rovio, which allow you to use many unique applications in the coming months using a smartphone Lumia .
We can schematically summarize the app announced dividing them by categories. This sport includes:
  • PGA Tour - developed in collaboration with Nokia and available exclusively for 12 months with the device Lumia
  • ESPN - exclusive until May 2013
As for the games category you can record the presence of EA and Rovio between partners of the Finnish company:
  • Angry Birds Space , which will arrive on the first device Lumia
  • EA will release  FIFA, Madden NFL, NBA Jam, Tiger Woods PGA Tour, Mirror's Edge and Yahtzee
The lifestyle category and finance is well represented by:
  • Groupon - the exclusivity period of six months from the launch
  • Tripdot
  • PayPal
As for applications dedicated to entertainment and news are reported:
  • AOL Entertainment Hub - exclusively for six months with the device Lumia
  • Time magazine
  • Newsweek
We close with a personal productivity application, or Box , dedicated to the management of Cloud storage services.
On several occasions it was confirmed that the entry of Nokia in the field of Windows Phone had a positive impact not only the producer but to the entire ecosystem. The recent alliance between the house and leading Finnish software house definitely will make more and richer in quality app for Windows Phone Marketplace. The exclusive represent also an important tool to make more attractive to the general public smartphones Lumia.

Nokia has shipped 17,000 Lumia smartphones to developers

Posted by ~ Erch ~ on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 | 04:20

Mark Silver, senior vice president of developer and marketplace experience of Nokia has announced that the Finnish brand, until now, has sent 17,000 Lumia developers committed to the growth of the Windows Phone platform. The company has contributed significantly to the expansion of the ecosystem of the Redmond operating system, given important push to the development of applications. Before the agreement between Nokia and Microsoft, in fact, the Marketplace app was formed by 7,000, while at the store in dedicated applications to Windows Phone has over 80,000 applications.
During Nokia World, the company had anticipated that it would distribute 25,000 Lumia smartphones to developers in the developer program designed to encourage the development of apps for Windows Phone. At the moment there are still other 8000 devices for distribution, but the results already obtained seem satisfactory, according to statements of Marco Argenti:
The growth (WP ecosystem) Also is two to the very repute We've Been Working Closely with Microsoft in a lot of practical actions to engage with developers to support our strategy
Growth (WP ecosystem) is also due to the fact that we have worked closely with Microsoft in many initiatives aimed at obtaining the support of our strategy by developers
Nokia in recent months has been engaged in the first person to encourage the development of phone appa for Windows Phone, not only producing exclusive apps for its Lumia range like Nokia Drive, Nokia Maps and Creative Studio, but also planning over 600 events for developers  from January until June.
The development of a robust ecosystem of apps is an indispensable element for the success of a mobile platform, and Nokia does not seem to have overlooked until now such an important element.

Nokia Lumia 800 modified to support wireless charging (video)

Posted by ~ Erch ~ on Monday, April 30, 2012 | 01:48

The Nokia 800 Lumia has become the protagonist of a hardware change, which introduced the possibility of wireless charging the battery . How to make this course interesting modification requires expert knowledge of electronics and a certain dexterity.Although not accessible to all users, the model provides an integrated feature that would not mind seeing in the future in the next Lumia smartphones.
The ability to recharge the battery without connecting the charging cable to the power outlet is not an absolute novelty in the smartphone world. Palm Pre smartphone with had introduced this feature using the Touchstone Charger, an electromagnetic induction charging base. A similar approach was taken by the user who, after being armed with a screwdriver and the necessary skills, amended Lumia 800 and summed up the proceedings with the video that we propose below.
We hope that Nokia can draw inspiration from the modification described above by introducing it in the future in the new device Lumia.

Nokia makes more money from its Patents than by its Lumia Windows Phones

Posted by ~ Erch ~ on Friday, April 27, 2012 | 06:44

The change in strategy based on switching to Windows Phone, strongly wanted by CEO Stephen Elop, Nokia still is not producing the desired results. So while the Finnish manufacturer has seen Samsung take the scepter of the phone market leader, the latest financial results showed alarming numbers, since Nokia managed to sold only  11.9 million smartphones (51% less than the same period of the previous year).

Many experts and analysts believe the first fruits of the collaboration with Microsoft does not arrive before the end of 2012, others just attack Nokia CEO Elop for some months, but as usual time will tell if Nokia did the right move jumping the WP train
Meanwhile, evidence that the Lumia Windows Phone can surely do better, as has been reported on AppleInsider , Nokia has recently earned more from the Apple smartphones than from its Lumia Windows Phones ,because Apple has in fact paid $ 600 million to pay the royalties for some key patents used on iPhone and iPad.
Payments for patents are not a novelty: Apple had to pay another $ 550 million for the licenses of Google services, while Big G has recently purchased Motorola Mobility for 12.5 billion dollars by securing a large number of essential patents.

Compal to see strong Lumia shipments to Nokia in 2Q of 2012

Posted by ~ Erch ~ on Wednesday, April 25, 2012 | 02:30

The Compal Communications continues to provide increases for shipments of Lumia Windows Phone. In fact, when I reported to expect a 20% increase in shipments of mobile devices between Q1 2012 and Q2 2012 , with the consequent 4 million Lumia 610 for the second quarter , the ODM based in Taiwan would have expected this second quarter of 2012, an increase of shipments of Lumia of 30-40%, for a total 2.5-3 million smartphones.
Needless to say, the demand has increased for the arrival of Lumia 610 and Lumia  800 in the markets of China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Vietnam.

Nokia Lumia 710 - Internet sharing coming in next firmware update

Posted by ~ Erch ~ on Monday, April 23, 2012 | 04:25

One of the most eagerly awaited function by users in possession of one of the recent Nokia Lumia smartphones is the possibility to share access to the internet wirelessly. This is a feature already used by other Windows Phone competitors who, unfortunately, not available with either Lumia 800 , or the Lumia 710.

Confirming recent rumors that the possibility of the 'internet sharing will be part of the next software update for the Lumia 710. More specifically it will be the firmware 1600.3030.8773.1212 , while the number of software version will be 7.10.8773.98 .
The update should be released shortly, given that you have already seen on Nokia's servers. A similar update could be released for the Lumia 800, still waiting to use the useful function of internet sharing.

Here comes the first custom ROM for Nokia Lumia 800 and Lumia 710

Posted by ~ Erch ~ on Saturday, April 14, 2012 | 06:58

Having achieved the important goal of the bootloader access and modify files residing in the NAND memory the XDA community few hours ago has released the first Custom ROM for Lumia 800 and Lumia 710.

The custom ROM is based on new firmware 12070 (RM819_059P453_1600.2487.8107.12070_002) and integrates the Interop Unlock, but unfortunately can be only flashed on Lumia 800 and Lumia 710 with unlocked bootloader (available only in the first official firmware).

Now the XDA community will work to make the ROM available on all Lumia devices, trying to open each version of the bootloader.

The flash ROM requires custom tool 'dd' (pre-installed on Linux distributions installed on Windows) and u hard reset the device. If you are interested will find information on Xda-Developers.

Nokia sold Two million Lumia phones sold in Q1 but profits are still on downfall

Posted by ~ Erch ~ on Wednesday, April 11, 2012 | 06:39

Nokia's has just announced its  Q1 results due on April 19th. It's reportedly sold €4.2 billion worth of phones, €2.3 billion coming from the sale of 71 million dumbphones and €1.7 billion coming from smart devices. The sales of the Nokia Lumia handsets are still growing, and Nokia managed to sell more than two million Lumia smartphones in the last three months alone.

How ever the success of the Lumia range was not enough to bring Nokia in positive territory. The figures mean that the company will make a loss of around three percent below  and Nokia lowered its outlook for the first quarter of 2012, noting that performance from its devices and services division will have a greater negative impact on its quarter than previously expected.
“Our disappointing Devices & Services first quarter 2012 financial results and outlook for the second quarter 2012 illustrates that our Devices & Services business continues to be in the midst of transition,” said Stephen Elop, President and CEO of Nokia.

Nokia Corporation Stock exchange release April 11, 2012 at 15.00 (CET+1)
Espoo, Finland – Nokia today provided preliminary information on certain aspects of its first quarter 2012 financial performance, including a lowered first quarter 2012 outlook for Devices & Services. During the first quarter 2012, multiple factors negatively affected Nokia’s Devices & Services business to a greater extent than previously expected. These factors included:
- Competitive industry dynamics, which negatively affected net sales in the Mobile Phones and Smart Devices business units, particularly in India, the Middle East and Africa and China; and - Gross margin declines, particularly in the Smart Devices business unit.
The impact of these factors on the non-IFRS Devices & Services operating margin in the first quarter 2012 was partially offset by a significant benefit from lower warranty costs.
Updated outlook for Devices & Services for the first quarter 2012:Nokia currently estimates that its non-IFRS Devices & Services operating margin in the first quarter 2012 was approximately negative 3 percent, compared to the previously expected range of “around breakeven, ranging either above or below by approximately 2 percentage points” primarily due to the factors noted above.
Outlook for Devices & Services for the second quarter 2012:Nokia expects its non-IFRS Devices & Services operating margin in the second quarter 2012 to be similar to or below the first quarter 2012 level. This outlook reflects that the first quarter 2012 benefit related to lower warranty costs is expected to be non-recurring, as well as expectations regarding a number of factors including:
- competitive industry dynamics continuing to negatively affect the Smart Devices and Mobile Phones business units; - timing, ramp-up, and consumer demand related to new products; and - the macroeconomic environment.
“Our disappointing Devices & Services first quarter 2012 financial results and outlook for the second quarter 2012 illustrates that our Devices & Services business continues to be in the midst of transition,” said Stephen Elop, President and CEO of Nokia. “Within our Smart Devices business unit, we have established early momentum with Lumia, and we are increasing our investments in Lumia to achieve market success. Our operator and distributor partners are providing solid support for Windows Phone as a third ecosystem, as evidenced most recently by the launch of the Lumia 900 by AT&T in the United States.”
Additional commentary on the first quarter 2012 for Devices & Services and Nokia:Nokia currently estimates that Devices & Services net sales in the first quarter 2012 were EUR 4.2 billion, comprised of Mobile Phones net sales of EUR 2.3 billion (71 million units), Smart Devices net sales of EUR 1.7 billion (12 million units), and Devices & Services Other net sales of EUR 0.2 billion. Based on the preliminary view, Nokia ended the first quarter 2012 around the high end of our normal 4 to 6 week channel inventory range, but on an absolute unit basis, channel inventories declined sequentially.
Nokia currently estimates that Devices & Services gross margin (including Devices & Services Other) for the first quarter 2012 was approximately 25%, with Mobile Phones gross margin of approximately 26% and Smart Devices gross margin of approximately 16%.
In the first quarter 2012, Nokia sold more than 2 million Lumia devices at an average selling price of approximately EUR 220 (reported within the Smart Devices business unit). Furthermore, Nokia has seen sequential growth in Lumia device activations every month since starting sales of Lumia devices in November 2011. Lumia has gained market share with both distribution partners and consumers. The Windows Phone ecosystem is also attracting developers and has expanded rapidly with more than 80,000 applications available.
Nokia currently estimates that at the end of the first quarter 2012, the company’s gross cash and other liquid assets were approximately EUR 9.8 billion, and Nokia’s net cash and other liquid assets were approximately EUR 4.9 billion. The sequential decline in net cash and other liquid assets was driven by Devices & Services, which experienced unfavorable and mostly non-recurring net working capital changes as well as operating losses. Nokia Siemens Networks contributed positively to Nokia’s cash flow in the first quarter 2012 due to net working capital improvements. This was despite Nokia Siemens Networks having a preliminarily estimated non-IFRS operating margin of approximately negative 5 percent in the first quarter 2012, in line with the previously provided outlook.
Actions to Address Competitive Industry Dynamics Affecting Devices & ServicesNokia is quickly taking action. Nokia will continue to increase its focus on accelerating Lumia sales, as well as on lowering the company’s cost structure, improving cash flow and maintaining a strong financial position.
- In the Smart Devices business unit, Nokia is increasing investments in Lumia to bring more products to more consumers in more markets. - In the Mobile Phones business unit, Nokia is taking tactical pricing actions in the near term and plans to bring new products to market in the second quarter 2012. - Nokia will accelerate planned cost reductions and will pursue additional significant structural actions if and when necessary.
“We are continuing to increase the clock speed of the company,” said Stephen Elop, President and CEO of Nokia. “The change is tangible, and we are proud of the way Nokia employees are quickly responding to the needs of consumers and partners.”
Nokia will provide full first quarter results and more details when it reports its first quarter 2012 results on April 19, 2012.
